Batgirl #41 Extreme - Patreon Ad by brentcherry

UPDATE - March 24, 2015: Darkened vest, part of Batgirl's costume, and The Joker's gloves.

My response to DC Comics caving into the pressure by the oversensitive who created the hashtag #CHANGETHECOVER in order to pull the variant cover of the upcoming Batgirl #41. I decided to mimic Rafael Albuquerque's style to compare his with mine here: i.imgur.com/uHGpq0v.jpg

After hearing the sad news that the excellent and gripping variant of the cover was not going to be published, my reaction was "They think that was disturbing?", followed by what a great man once said, "wait'll they get a load of ME!:D (Big Grin)

Not only does this make people rethink their stance on the original, I think this is a honestly and truly represents one of the most famous and iconic supervillains in the 75 years.

Seriously, though. Did ANYONE who complained about the variant EVEN READ The Killing Joke? You know, one of the most famous and important comics that became canon in the Batman mythos? While we're at it, are they NOT familiar with THE JOKER?

I mean, WOW! It just blows my mind when I hear people complain about something like this.

Read the article and see the original variant here: www.comicbookresources.com/art…

I simply couldn't look at this and NOT give it a critique, it's just amazing. Here we go!

Vision: You know what? This picture shows the absolute brilliance of the Joker's character. If this was Dick Grayson or even Jason, and he was without a top, no one would complain. However, the Joker does not have moral standards; HE'S A MURDERER. The "M' in Joker stands for Mercy. No M? That is because he HAS no mercy; Joker does not see Batgirl as a person, he see's her as a piece of meat that pretty much doesn't deserve to live, a true psychopath. Vision gets a perfect score due to showing the true brutal nature of the Joker. A perfect representation of the Joker.

Originality: I like how he has cut her bat symbol out on her chest, even though he's removed her costume. I also really like how you don't get to see his eyes in this picture too. Originality is higher than it should be, because of how stunning it is visually.

Technique: If what you were trying to convey was just how demonic and insane the Joker can truly be, then you, sir, have nailed it. Notice how she is completely helpless at the moment, yet he has both a knife AND a gun? That's overkill; and that's the way it SHOULD be when you're writing or drawing the Joker. He likes to make a scene, and have an audience.

Impact: Is there anything that needs to be said on this? I mean, the fact that some people are complaining about it, probably means they have not read that many comics that show the Joker's true nature. That's not an insult; I mean, the Joker has sliced his own face off before! What makes you think he wouldn't go this far? I think this is brilliant, and I applaud you sir!

OVERALL - 4.5/5 = 9/10

This piece of art is amazing; I truly think it is. Coming from someone who's read a great deal of comics, it's one of the best.

Where to begin with this wicked piece of work? Well, let's me just say I'm pretty impressed because you've managed to portray the Joker the way he should be: an insane, psychotic MONSTER. And, to put it franky, I find this overall piece a step up from the original one that all these Keyboard Warriors are getting their panties in a bunch about. Compared to this one, the original image has got to be the tamest depiction of the Joker ever! I mean, Batgirl has a VERY good reason to be frozen in shock here, and, of course, all the Joker does is smile his giant, toothy smile. The only thing I hate is the fact that you're probably going to get flack once these thin-skinned Keyboard Warriors find this... But don't you dare let them get to you! Keep this image up forever, and be sure to spread the word!

That's a pretty edgy cover but then again The Killing Joke was a pretty edgy comic. So this is the image or your version anyway that got changed? The most disturbing thing about it is I heard from some of the people against the cover and they actually said that they think that people are supposed to identify with the Joker in this this image...really? I mean he doesn't even have eyes, he's very clearly meant to be a monster that you fear not a hero that you emulate.

I bet it's because her tits are out...what is it with people and thinking tits are always sexual even when it's clearly done for horror? sometimes people show characters naked to show them vulnerable. -_- I swear, these people failed at reading the mood of the image.

That's an excellent way of putting it! And the more I think about it, I'm pretty sure that it's because they place so much emphasis on what "feels" good that nothing else matters. Not even the opinions of those whom they disagree with.

Now that's what I call edgy.

You imitated the artists' style quite impressively, how did you do it?
And do you take commissions? Anyone that is as sick in the head as this is right up my alley.

I tend to be very good at refining things, and the artist laid out the groundwork for me, so adding more to it wasn't very difficult for me. :)

I don't know if I can make any promises at the moment, but I can find the time, I would LOVE to do a commission! :la:

So is it more of an edit than a drawing? Not that that's less impressive, I'm trying to pick up that talent myself. Can't really create without a base.

Well, if you do accept them at some point, I hope to know

It's still a drawing. I wanted to keep it as close to the original's style as possible, so it took a lot of work to replicate it. One of the best advices I've ever received as both and artist and a designer was to "imitate before you innovate", meaning you take what already works, and build upon it.

That's good advice, but surely you mean take what works, !replicate it!, and THEN build on it, don't you? I have to say,  I'd love to see a sped-up version of you drawing this piece. I'll BET it took a lot of work.

Now that aside, time for drama. I have to admit, I still have an issue with this whole post. And not in the way you would think.
No, I don't have a problem with deviant or edgy images, hell I get off on them some times.
It's the idea of it simply being a facade, protecting the picture's content by claiming it as being a part of some free speech/drawing freedom agenda or retaliatory strike against these !darn! censoring feminazis.
Could it just be you thought that you thought putting out a nude helpless Batgirl without that preface would make you seem like a disturbed pervert? Especially with the blood/cuts you had to add, I mean come on...

Still, I have to admire your boldness. I probably wouldn't post something like that, because I wouldn't know how to defend myself if I came under attack.

Yes, that's what I meant! :)

No, I took issue with the pressure by the SJWs to take down the original. I stand by the philosophy that merely expressing an idea or belief should be freely expressed, regardless of how one personally feels about it, which I think I've accomplished with this drawing.

Thanks! The way I see it, the salty outrage is just as satisfying as the praises I've received for it. :D

And let's not forget the dark knight. Batman wasn't willing to let a homicidal anarchist die; But he had no problem in killing the guy who took his girlfriend.

Ah yes, I remember that. I think it was more about protecting Gordon's kid from Harvey, and killing him was just an unfortunate outcome.

Maybe. I think that the death of Harvey Dent was a painful choice for Batman. If two faces had survived he would have had to pay for his crimes, and consequently, he wouldn't have been able to carry out his law against the mafia. But by killing him, Batman would be breaking his only moral code. Is like when he had to decide between saving the life of Rachel or Harvey.

I think most of the concern (and part of the reason it got pulled off the table) was because that would be the first piece of art displayed for the issue. As far as covers go, it was apparent it would dissuade more average comic buyers for whatever reason, become controversial, and when more out-of-the loop readers see it on shelves, it would be a "oh god, it's that issue" reaction since negative social media is all they may know about it.
As far as this piece goes? It's pretty impressive. Not to sound too macabre but some of the flesh physics on the chest feel off - the face reacts a little more realistically but the cuts on the chest stay static even though these are pretty deep cuts.
Cheers though. Again, impressive, and very eye-catching. And to summarize : if that sort of image were inside the comic issue rather than the front, I do feel that there would be far less controversy, if any.

That's definitely one way of looking at it. According to the sources, it was because Batgirl was being victimized that caused the outcry. But isn't that kind of what makes it more engaging? The idea that the protagonist has something they need to overcome?

And thank you! That's a good suggestion about having the flesh peel a bit, though I was concerned that it would be too distracting and lose it's satirical impact.

True, if the image were on the inside, I doubt there would be so much controversy. But that would defeat the purpose of having it as a cover, don't you think?
